Even a cursory glance at legislation being proposed for the upcoming Virginia General Assembly session reveals some scary stuff … Scary is a word that has been bandied about a lot in recent weeks, as we end 2016 and begin a new year filled with much more of the usual amount of fear and anxiety.
The General Assembly session starts in less than two weeks, and the forces that want to move Virginia forward still appear to be in the minority. Staff members or volunteers of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy will be at the General Assembly daily, to monitor and report the work of our elected representatives, advocate for important justice issues with those lawmakers, and help the many members of the Commonwealth’s faith communities find their voice in the process.
Among the bills there are also some hopeful things: a minimum wage increase, fair redistricting, common sense gun control ordinances, bills ending discrimination practices along with other human rights reforms, criminal justice-related actions that the Center has long advocated … even a call to elect the president of the United States by the popular vote!
The Virginia Interfaith Center will continue to fight for the marginalized according to the beliefs of our Virginia faith groups, all of which call for justice for our neighbors.
There are still a few hours to make a contribution to the Center for the current calendar year to help continue this fight.
