Civic Engagement

“Voting is a Civic Sacrament.”

~ Rev. Theodore Hesburgh

Using Our Voices to Make a Difference

Our year-round civic engagement program highlights the essential role of faith and goodwill in the democratic process. Voting is more than a civic duty—it is a means to secure good governance. The ballot box provides a vital opportunity to support leaders who embody fairness, compassion, and integrity.

Many of our faiths, values, and moral convictions do not call for us to withdraw from public life. On the contrary, lasting social change requires informed political participation. The public square is a place where our deepest inner values can be lived out authentically—by caring for our families and communities and by advancing policies rooted in justice.

Get Out the Vote (GOTV)

We mobilize people of faith and goodwill to organize activities that encourage participation at the ballot box. By building engagement within faith communities, we strengthen democracy from the ground up.

VICPP is equipping congregations to ensure that 100 percent of members vote in November. Faith communities commit to boosting registration, encouraging voting, and sharing educational resources. Congregations will receive a toolkit, resources for bulletins and websites, a “100 Percent Voting” banner for hanging outside, and possibly a financial incentive.

Voter Education

We provide and help coordinate opportunities for people of faith to learn about upcoming elections, essential voter information, and Virginia Interfaith priority issues. Our work supports clergy leaders in building 100% voting congregations.

Postcards

VICPP activists and friends hand-write postcards to send to infrequent voters. In 2025, we were able to mail out 15,300 postcards. If you’d like to help write post cards please contact Robert Lester, VICPP’s civic engagement coordinator, robert@virginiainterfaithcenter.org

Voter Protection

We equip people of faith and goodwill with tools to confront voter suppression, misinformation, and inequitable polling conditions—ensuring every voice is heard and every vote is counted.

Election Protection: There are lots of ways to protect elections in Virginia. Register with the Virginia Election Protection initiative to create a volunteer account, and you will receive invitations for virtual trainings with the Virginia Civic Engagement Table and the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights.

VICPP is also partnering with the Virginia Election Protection Coalition to assist voters in 2026! Virginia Election Protection Volunteers are the first line of defense against voter suppression during early voting and on election day. Poll monitors are present at precincts on election day to ensure that voters can cast their ballots, free from intimidation. Volunteer to make an impact in your community. Keep an eye on this space to sign up for training as a poll monitor.
