Book Event with Matthew Desmond
Join us on May 4 at 7 p.m. to hear from acclaimed author Matthew Desmond about his new book, Poverty: by America, and what we can do here in Virginia to end poverty.
Matt Desmond is the award winning author of the new book Poverty, by America. Mr. Desmond challenges Americans to look at themselves and their commitment to really ending poverty. His contention is that we could end poverty if we want to, but that many of us benefit from the choices made by policies that do not invest in ending poverty.

Co-sponsors Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, the Virginia Poverty Law Center and The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis have all been on the front-lines of fighting for an end to poverty in Virginia. Mr. Desmond is challenging us all to do more and stop accepting the status quo in terms of government spending — particularly on programs and tax benefits that help upper income families more than lower income ones.
Mr. Desmond will talk about his book, answer some questions and then be available to sign books.
