Jan. 17 – Good news today on 2 bills VICPP is advocating:
SB 1640 – In-State Tuition Eligibility and
SB 1079 – Minimum Wage Act; removes exemptions for newsboys, shoe-shine boys, etc., from coverage
SB 1640 – in-state tuition eligibility passed out of the Senate Education committee today! This bill would give immigrants in Virginia, including undocumented immigrants, the opportunity to gain access to in-state tuition rates for colleges and universities, provided they meet the same requirements as other Virginians. This bill is headed to the Senate Finance Committee next, where it faces an uphill battle.

SB 1079 – Minimum Wage Act; removes exemptions for newsboys, shoe-shine boys, etc., from coverage
Wage Theft is scheduled for a full Senate vote tomorrow, Friday, January 18th! One of VICPP’s priority pieces of legislation this session, this bill removes the minimum wage exemption for several historically African-American jobs including “newsboys” and “shoeshine boys”, in addition to removing the exemption for workers paid by the piece, such as garment workers. Right now these jobs are not required to be paid minimum wage, this bill would fix that injustice.
