The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy’s (VICPP) top priority is getting Virginia to expand healthcare to the 400,000 people who could get comprehensive healthcare if Virginia would draw down the federal Medicaid dollars that are available to Virginia under the Affordable Care Act.

A new research report issued by the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine shows US-Med-Postthat states that have used federal Medicaid dollars to expand healthcare have significantly improved health care for low-income people. Read the full report here.

Virginia’s General Assembly prides itself on good government and pragmatic policies that are good for businesses and the economy. Expanding health coverage by tapping into federal Medicaid dollars makes good sense, but legislators often claim they are not hearing from constituents on this issue. It is our job to change that!

Toolkit cover

Download for free, VICPP’s new Healthcare Expansion Toolkit. It provides tools to help you:

  • Meet with your delegate and/or senator.
  • Organize a letter-writing opportunity in your congregation.
  • Ask your city, town or county to pass a resolution calling upon the General Assembly to expand healthcare by drawing down federal Medicaid dollars.
  • Answer questions people may have about the issue.
  • Learn what your faith tradition says about expanding healthcare.

We are ramping up our advocacy NOW! We can’t wait till the General Assembly convenes in January. We are organizing meetings with legislators, pushing for local resolutions and engaging congregations in letter-writing. To be effective statewide, we need your engagement.

Please download the toolkit. Then, let Karen Cameron (Karen@VAconsumervoices.org),14 who coordinates our healthcare advocacy, know how you can help. Tell us which Delegate or Senator you can contact (if you don’t know your Delegate and/or Senator, you can use the link in the toolkit). Tell us from which city, town or county you can seek a resolution. Or, tell us when your congregation will organize a letter-writing opportunity.

Thanks so much. Together, I know we can get this critical issue back on the state agenda.

With peace and justice,

Kim Bobo,
Executive Director
