Jan. 18 – Good news from the GA!

WAGE THEFT: MINIMUM WAGE

SB 1079 passed the full Senate by a vote of 37-3! One of VICPP’s priority bills this session – SB 1079 removes the minimum wage exemption for several historically African-American jobs including “newsboys” and “shoeshine boys,” in addition to removing the exemption for workers paid by the piece, such as garment workers. Right now employers are not required to pay these workers minimum wage and this bill would fix that injustice. SB 1079 is headed to the House of Delegates next, but likely will not be acted upon until after February 5th.  We’ll keep you posted. Thank your Senator for their support!

Monday will be a busy day for VICPP at the GA

OPPOSE GUNS IN HOUSES OF WORSHIP

Monday at 8am, SB 1024 should finally be heard. This bill would allow Guns in Houses of Worship. VICPP and people of faith from across the Commonwealth are staunchly opposed to this bill. While it passed the Senate last year (before dying in the House) we’re hopeful we can stop its progress this Monday! Call or email your Senator to ask them to oppose SB1024.

WAGE THEFT: PAY STUBS

Other priority legislation – SB 1696, would require that all workers in Virginia get a paystub on payday. Right now many workers are not receiving paystubs, which can lead to wage theft, such as underpayment of salary and improper deductions. SB 1696 will be heard in the Senate Commerce & Labor committee Monday afternoon. If your Senator is on that committee, we urge you to contact her/him and ask for their support of SB 1696!

IMMIGRANT RIGHTS: IN-STATE TUITION

Two bills related to in-state tuition for immigrants will be heard in different sub-committees on MondayHB 1882 and HB 2388. VICPP will be present to support those pieces of legislation in their first stage of the process. (Photo: student advocates ready to testify in support of In-State Tuition)
